There’s no doubt that veganism is a growing and important food trend, and there are increasing signs that plant-based eating is here to stay.
Towards the end of April, McDonald’s launched a vegan burger in its restaurants in Germany. It’s chosen the Nestle-produced plant-based patty made from soy and wheat. Interestingly, this vegan option contains 17 grams of protein, which is the same as in a McDonald’s classic beef burger.
It will be served with mustard, ketchup, tomato, pickles, onion and greens, with a spokesperson for the chain describing it as providing the “typical McDonald’s taste”, Vegan Food and Living reported.
This isn’t the first time that McDonald’s has introduced a vegetarian or vegan option on its menu. Last year, it launched its vegetarian Happy Meal, which has been accredited by the Vegetarian Society.
It’s also introduced vegan menu options in places such as Finland and Norway. Whether this plant-based rollout will continue to other markets has yet to be seen.
But it’s not the only fast food chain that’s embracing this new trend. The Daily Mail recently revealed that KFC is reportedly working on developing a vegan chicken burger for its UK restaurants.
With more and more people trying to cut back on their meat consumption for a host of reasons, it makes sense that chains like McDonald’s and KFC that have such meat-heavy restaurants will try to branch out to appeal to this growing demographic.
